This is my first post. Join me as I navigate personal insecurities while exploring the dangers of blogging.
I've wanted to have my own personal website and blog for the longest time, but for a bunch of reasons, I never actually went ahead and did it. Here's why:
1) Blogging seems narcissistic and self absorbed. I mean, honestly, it takes a lot of hutzpah to think people will actually want to consume the content you create. What makes me so special? Why would anyone care what I think? Why is my point of view unique (spoiler alert: Maybe It's Not)? What can I possibly offer the reader? I didn't start a blog for the longest time because I was worried that doing so would be selfish and silly and would only serve to advertise my hubris. I still worry about this.
2) Blogging could get me in trouble with my employer. Yep. The internet is a dangerous place, and not everyone who consumes my content will do so because they like me. Some people might try to use the things I publish here to cause me professional harm, so I am going to have to be careful. I'm prevented from sharing a lot of really interesting stories because I have signed non-disclosure agreements. Also, sharing gossip online isn't exactly the best way to get people to trust you, especially in a political context. I want this blog to help showcase my experience and make me a more marketable, desirable, employee.
3) Blogging takes time, money and expertise I don't really have. Figuring out a good platform to use, getting a domain name, creating the content, etc is all difficult to do when you already have your hands full with life. The demands of a busy schedule and professional life don't leave a lot of time left over for opining on the issues of the day. Further, getting a good URL and platform costs money that I wasn't sure I wanted to invest. Finally, I wasn't entirely certain I had the technical skills to make a personal website happen, not to mention, what on earth am I going to talk about. Which brings me to point number...
4) My expertise isn't all that interesting. I am a non-profit fundraising professional, but the internet is already drowning in non-profit fundraising blogs, so I don't really intend to do a lot of that here. I could talk about politics, as I have a lot of campaign experience, but there again, there are plenty of people already doing that. I want this space to offer something unique to people who come to visit here, but I am still figuring out what exactly that looks like.
5) I'm not entirely sure what the point of this is. Okay maybe I am being slightly dishonest with this one, as the point is obviously shameless self promotion. But I am still uncertain about the topics I want to cover, or what I can really offer the viewer with the content I want to create and share here in this space. There is still a lot to figure out about what I want this to be.
So that's it. Those are basically my blogging concerns. As you can see, I overcame my fears and I'm here blogging it out anyways. Thank you for being here with me. Have you ever wanted to launch a personal website or blog? If so, what was your experience with it? What's holding you back from following your blogging dreams?
